Kiran Bedi and No Marks - II (maybe there is a reason)

Aman bought this link to my notice. Thanks love.
.
.
Kiran Bedi says -
“Beauty is like spotless character and this cream redefines beauty by not making you fair, but giving good and clear skin. It is an honest product just like my causes."
She added,
"A portion from the sale of each pack will go to drug addiction and women welfare centres.”
She wants to add a hall to her drug addiction centre with the proceeds.
.
.
Maybe it makes some sense. Maybe I was too quick to write that post.
I am ok with the second statement but first one still sounds ameturish to me. Being from the marketing domain I still maintain that there is a major mismatch between the product and the brand ambassador.
.
Having said that, the fact that a part of the proceeds will go for a good cause is impressive. Now we have to wait and see if people will really buy the product.
.
I again want to reiterate that I have nothing against her; in fact I respect her for what she has been. But as a marketer I can’t help but analyze the combination.

What is wrong with Kiran Bedi?

A few days back I was interviewed by UTVi for a show which is yet to make its appearance. Among a series of questions that I was asked one was if I had any female role model.
Me being me said that I don’t have a role model but one woman I admire would be Kiran Bedi. Not that I ever wanted to become an IPS officer. But because she stood for what she believed and excelled in what she did in a largely male dominated field.

Now yesterday I saw this commercial where Ms Bedi was selling the god forsaken cosmetic cream called “No Marks" - I mean what the hell was that??
I haven’t ever seen such a miss-match between the brand and the brand ambassador.

For someone who has won enough and more accolades all her life, has stood as a symbol of women lib, has done the more than half the country proud, this “No Marks” endorsement doesn’t make any sense.

Fine so everyone has the right to earn money but even then how can anyone explain this disaster.

Ms Bedi – I had titanic regards for you and I am thoroughly saddened with this act of yours. You could have chosen something better.

Gulal – this ain’t any review

I don’t believe in writing movie reviews. And this post is no different.
All I am trying to do is urge my readers to go watch Gulal.
It’s worth it.

After burning holes in our pockets by buying silk curtains for the new house (that’s dope for another post!!!) Aman and I decided to unwind with some movie. It was already 6 pm and chances of getting tickets for a 7ish movie were dim. Never the less we thought of giving it a try and viola we got the tickets for a 6:30 pm show of Gulal.
After a quick shot of caffeine we went inside the theater only to find that 70 % of the seats were unoccupied. Yes 70% seats were empty in a multiplex, on a Sunday evening in the first week of movie’s release.
Wonder why? Because the movie has no Khan, no cheap humor and no larger than life star cast. The fact that the movie didn’t receive any marketing prior to its release has played such a dominant role in people ignoring it.
So the basic premise of logical thinking holds true – how ever good or bad your product is, it is of utmost importance to position it well.

Anyways, let me not digress. The idea is that although the movie has been low profile and not advertised and marketed much, it still deserves a viewing.

Anurag Kashyap is at his best. And so are Kay Kay Menon and the other guy who plays Ran Sa. (I don’t know his name and no time to Google).
Movie hits you hard. It’s a story of love, treachery, greed, passion, innocence, fear, sadism and power.

Statuary Warning:
The language is abusive so avoid taking children for obvious reasons and parents for you might get uncomfortable, and if you belong to the cadre of viewers who cannot tolerate the swear words then excuse yourselves from watching it.

For others do watch it for the awesome lyrics, mind-blowing performances and astounding story telling!!!

Jaago Re - Tata Tea

The roads here suck.
There is just too much corruption.
Look at the horrible traffic condition.
Another murder, the crime control has gone down to dogs.
It’s impossible for women to walk alone on the streets after dark.
You can’t get anything done without bribing the officials.
And so on…

Complaining is but a second nature. But someone did hear us out. TATA Tea this time. I am not saying it’s purely a socially conscious move. But so what, they are here to do business and if they can do something socially relevant with energy and muscle of being “the TATA’s”, then why not.

The Jaago Re campaign has been in existence since Oct 2007. With this campaign they have successfully clubbed all 4 of their brand into 1 giant “Tata Tea” brand.

Jaago Re campaign was all talk with interesting TVC till the recent launch of the http://www.jaagore.com/ website.

We all know how important it is to stop complaining and start voting. But the fact remains that getting oneself on the voters list is a mammoth task.

The Jaago Re “1 Billion Votes” movement primarily aims at making the process of enlisting oneself into the voters list a breeze. I am talking from my own experience. The entire online registrations process took not more than 3 minutes. The second step is to submit the online form, age proof and address proof to the electoral registration office which nearest to your residence (in my case it is a mere 4 km from where I stay).
Thereafter I will be alerted through email and via sms (that is if I choose so) about the status of my application.

For people who have already registered to vote, registering with Jaago Re still makes sense. Haven’t we heard of people whose name mysteriously disappear from the list on the day of the voting? For people who have changed cities and have no clue where to go to update the status, http://www.jaagore.com/ is the answer.

As for the website
– It’s fairly simple and easy to navigate.
– Quite self explanatory and matter of fact
– Interesting interface
– A comprehensive list of FAQ’s and sensible bifurcation between the different kinds of voters’ query.
– Good content from information and educational point of view.

This movement is aimed at the youth and for a country whose majority of population is under the age of 35 years this targeting makes a lot of sense.

Tea drinking is as deeply engraved into our lifestyles. For Indians (especially North Indians) tea is more than just another beverage. Its part of our culture. Most people I know can’t imagine a day without a hot steaming cup of tea. Now Tata Tea’s Jaago Re has taken this physically and emotionally stimulating beverage to another level. The level of Social awakening.

So if you already don’t vote and are not listed on the electoral list do so now. Here is the link for your convenience.

Do we see a pattern here???

Check this out:

Shah Rukh Khan is the Brand Ambassador for Pepsi, and sooner than later we find Aamir Khan as the brand ambassador for Coke.
Shah Rukh Khan sells Sunfeast, and Aamir has been recently signed for selling Monaco from Parle
Shah Rukh Khan endorses Nokia and lately we see Aamir doing so for Samsung
Shah Rukh Khan has been screaming Hyundai Santro and now I10 for a long time and after some delay we saw Aamir Khan subtly promoting Toyota Innova
Shah Rukh Khan started promoting the Tag Heuer and Aamir followed suit with Titan.
And the most recent one, where Shah Rukh Khan has been the face of Dish TV, Aamir has started selling Tata Sky

Is this the simple formula the industry has been following or is it mere coincidence?

Pizza Woes

I had been watching those Pizza Hut World Food Fest ads on TV for quite some time and was waiting with all my heart to get there and sink my teeth into those yummy, cheesy, delicious pizza’s as soon as it was launched. They had raised my expectations so high that the first opportunity I got, I coaxed Aman to the nearest Pizza Hut outlet. And that chance came only this weekend. Those ads had my appetite go out of the roof. Let me confess something here – I am a great lover of Pizza. Yeah, I know I am not suppose to divulge such gory details aloud but that’s the truth. And here they were offering Mexican, Lebanese, Chinese and French over and above the regular American and Italian.

So there I was, all hungry ready to devour.
I browsed the menu and the creepy feeling of disillusionment started to set in. They only had 1, I repeat 1, pizza each in the Mexican, Lebanese and Chinese non vegetarian category. French was not even there!!!!!! This couldn’t be true. Aman sat there giving me an “I told you so” look. This couldn’t be the World Food Fest. I kept reading the menu for quite sometime hoping a new page would pop up giving me some more options. As expected nothing like that happened. We finally ordered a pan pizza of each variety of the only 3 that they had to offer. And yeah it wasn’t mind blowing at all. Alas, being heart broken would be an understatement.

Well this is not the first time I have been lured by commercials only to be disappointed by the end product. Now that’s the power of marketing and right messaging. But don’t these guys realize the cost involved?
In my stint with ICICI selling general insurance, I kept repeating to my team never to wrong sell. There is nothing more alarming than an irate customer. And sooner these marketers realize this healthier it will be.
As for me, Pizza Hut will have to do something really special to win me back. Till then its Dominos Pizza all the way...
